He received
a liberal and technical education, accordingly to the standards of an
industrial family, although it is said that Pierre hardly handled discipline.
Once he
completed his education (at 18), he entered the army for a year’s service in
the 14th French Dragoons (cavalry) in a subordinate position.
With a view
to fitting him for a responsible position in his father’s business, he spent
the next three years traveling in Europe, finally moving to England in 1880.
There, he studied the textile industry. Meanwhile, he met his future wife,
Nellie Cooper, along with some friends. Besides, he is seduced by the tales and
the opportunities of the American West he is talked about by his English
friends.
So Pierre
Wibaux decided to give up his future in the family businesses and go it alone
in America. Learning of his decision, his disappointed father handed him
$10,000 and bid him adieu.
